How to Convert HEIC to JPG on Any Device

HEIC is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11, introduced in 2017. It offers excellent image quality at about half the file size of JPG — which is why Apple switched to it. The problem is compatibility: Windows, older Android devices, and many web applications don't support HEIC natively.

What Is HEIC?

HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It uses the HEVC (H.265) video codec for image compression — the same technology used for high-efficiency video. Apple adopted it to reduce storage usage on iPhones while maintaining quality.

HEIC supports: 16-bit colour depth (vs JPG's 8-bit), transparency, image sequences (like Live Photos), and HDR metadata. All of this is invisible to users but makes HEIC technically superior to JPG.

The compatibility problem: Windows needs a codec pack to open HEIC. Most web upload forms reject it. Social media platforms either reject it or silently convert it. For sharing and uploading, JPG remains far more practical.

Converting on iPhone (Prevent HEIC at Source)

The cleanest solution is stopping HEIC at the source:

Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible

This makes your iPhone shoot JPG instead of HEIC. No conversion needed. The trade-off: photos take roughly twice the storage space. If you're low on iPhone storage, HEIC is worth keeping — just convert when needed.

Converting on Mac

Mac Preview opens HEIC natively since macOS High Sierra:

1. Open the HEIC file in Preview 2. File → Export 3. Choose JPEG from the format dropdown 4. Set quality and save

For batch conversion: select multiple files in Finder, right-click → Open With → Preview. Then File → Export Selected Images → JPEG.

Converting on Windows

Windows 10/11 can open HEIC with the free HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store. To convert: open in Photos, then File → Save a copy → JPG.

FAQs

There is a quality trade-off. HEIC supports 16-bit colour and JPG is 8-bit, so some colour depth information is lost. In practice for most photos this difference is imperceptible. If you're converting for web or sharing purposes the result will look identical to the original on standard displays.
HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) is the container format. HEIC is the specific variant Apple uses that requires HEVC compression. They're often used interchangeably. Both .heic and .heif file extensions refer to the same type of file — an HEIF container with HEVC-encoded image data.
Modern Android devices (Android 9+) can open HEIC files natively in most gallery apps. Older Android versions cannot. When sharing photos with Android users on older devices, convert to JPG first. WhatsApp and most messaging apps convert automatically when sharing.
