Lorem ipsum text is derived from a work by the ancient Roman statesman and philosopher Cicero. The specific passage comes from "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (On the Ends of Good and Evil), written in 45 BC. The original Latin reads: "Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit..." — meaning roughly: "Nor is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure."

The Lorem ipsum text commonly used today is a scrambled and abbreviated version of this passage that has been in use since the 1500s in typesetting, and became widely used in digital design from the 1980s onward.
